Following the selling-out of the course in June 2022 this is being offered again in September.
This course will help you gain the confidence and skills to lead a science department – over 4 weeks you will learn strategies and techniques to go from surviving to inspiring, as well as building a network of peers.
There are many generic middle leadership courses available, but this addresses the specific challenges of leading a sciencedepartment – the biggest subject in the school, with practicals, labs, and technicians to consider, as well as the difficulty of recruiting and retaining good teachers.
Ideal for those recently appointed as head of science, or 2i/c, or with responsibility for a key stage within science. Also, if you aspire to be a HoS and are looking to strengthen your application, this course is for you!
The course will cover all aspects of science leadership for 2022, including leadership and vision, teamwork, curriculum, recruitment and retention, teaching and learning, workload, quality assurance, difficult conversations and more.
- The course is delivered via four 1-hour sessions on Zoom
- Wednesdays in September, 4-5pm: the 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th
- Places are limited to maximise interactivity
- Each session will focus on a different aspect of leading a secondary science department: including leadership and vision, teamwork, curriculum and teaching and learning, workload, quality assurance and difficult conversations.
- Cost for all 4 hours including all course materials: £185 early-bird until end June, £200 thereafter; £170 each for two or more colleagues booking together (can be from different schools, e.g. in a partnership or MAT)
- Colleagues are welcome from any type of secondary school, with any previous experience, located anywhere!
- The first 5 to book are offered a free coaching session
- A padlet will be used to share resources and ideas, and if you have to miss part of a session, we can share the recordings afterwards.
Course director Christina Astin has 30 years’ experience of science teaching and leading departments, as well s training teachers and advising schools. She is the Kent Secondary Science Advisor and National College science expert. She is also Advisor to Physics Partners and Chair of the Planet Possibility Consortium. Christina is a Fellow of both the Institute of Physics and the Chartered College of Teaching.
