Engaging with Schools: building successful education outreach projects is a one-day, in-person workshop for organisations looking to engage with schools. The course has already been delivered in multiple locations across the UK. The next in-person delivery takes place on 21 November 204 at the iconic Turner Contemporary in Margate, Kent.
Engaging with Schools is a one-day in-person course which will help you and your organisation to plan and develop outreach activities that have a positive impact on the young people you engage with, whether to help build a future talent pipeline, help overcome the challenges faced by schools or raise your profile in the local community.
You may have a project in mind which you’d like to develop further, have attempted unsuccessfully to engage with schools, or be looking to take your outreach programme to the next level. This course can help with all these aims, and more.

- critical evaluation of exemplar outreach projects; what works well?
- practicalities and safeguarding when engaging with school-age children
- considering equality, diversity and inclusion to ensure your project reaches the right young people
- planning an outreach project

- a tour of Turner Contemporary galleries to see the current exhibitions and venue spaces, and an opportunity to meet with key staff

Course directors: Christina Astin has over 30 years’ experience of teaching (science) and leading departments, as well as training teachers and advising schools. She has delivered successful STEM outreach projects for many corporate and charitable clients. She is well known for her work on cross-sector partnerships; she is author of Partnerships WorkBook and leads the #PartnerChat network of over 200 schools. Christina is a Fellow of both the Institute of Physics and the Chartered College of Teaching.
Jeremy Thomas is an Outreach and Public Engagement Fellow at the University of Portsmouth Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation and a member of the STFC’s Advisory Panel on Public Engagement. After 10 years in Earth Observation research at the Met Office and British Antarctic Survey, Jeremy was a physics teacher and head of department for 28 years, 8 of them as Science Partnership Coordinator.
Jeremy and Christina initially met in the 2000s on a panel advising on a mission to the Moon!
