Girls and STEM is designed to raise awareness of the gender imbalance in STEM and why it’s important not to dismiss careers because of stereotypes. When the father of a Y10 female student told me “You don’t look like a physics teacher”, I knew we still had some work to do!
The 1-hour workshop is divided in two halves:
- Facts, figures, discussion and interaction about stereotypes in STEM
- Using the My Skills My Life questionnaire (developed by WISE – Women in Science and Engineering) to identify the type of work which is a natural fit for each student.
The workshop is ideal for students in years 7 – 11, adjusted for age appropriateness accordingly. It is primarily aimed at girls, but mixed groups are also welcome. We have also delivered the workshop to parents at careers events and to teachers at CPD events.
Schools can book the workshop for a single class, a hall-full, several classes simultaneously online.
Some schools have included it as part of a collapsed curriculum day, a British Science Week event, or to celebrate International Women’s Day.
